Introduction
India has consistently used cultural diplomacy as a vital element of its foreign policy. One of the most prominent symbols of this soft power is International Yoga Day, celebrated annually on 21st June. Conceptualised and proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2014, the initiative has now transformed into a global movement, reflecting India’s influence as a civilizational power.
The recent 11th International Day of Yoga (2025) celebration in Visakhapatnam, led by PM Modi, once again showcased India’s ability to bring together nations through shared spiritual and wellness values.
What is Soft Power?
Coined by Joseph Nye, “soft power” refers to the ability of a nation to shape preferences of others through appeal and attraction, as opposed to hard (military or economic) power. It involves culture, values, political systems, and foreign policies that are seen as legitimate or having moral authority.
Yoga as an Instrument of India’s Soft Power
1. Global Recognition via the UN
- In 2014, the UNGA adopted India’s proposal to declare 21st June as the International Day of Yoga.
- It was co-sponsored by 177 countries—a rare diplomatic success—making it the fastest-adopted UN resolution in history.
2. Mass Global Participation
- Yoga Day events are held in over 190 countries through Indian embassies, ICCR centers, and local organizations.
- In 2023, yoga sessions were held in UN Headquarters, Eiffel Tower, and Arctic regions, showcasing its universal appeal.
3. Cultural Identity & Civilizational Continuity
- Yoga is deeply rooted in Vedic and Upanishadic traditions of India.
- Promoting yoga reinforces India’s identity as a knowledge-driven and peace-oriented civilization, distinct from colonial narratives.
4. Wellness Diplomacy
- Post-COVID, yoga has become synonymous with mental and physical resilience.
- It complements Ayurveda and holistic health systems promoted under the Ministry of AYUSH.
5. Digital & Youth Engagement
- Programmes like “My Life, My Yoga” video challenge, Common Yoga Protocol App, and online yoga campaigns have engaged millions globally.
- These initiatives reflect how India’s traditional systems have adapted to modern platforms.
Government’s Institutional Support
Body/Initiative | Role |
---|---|
Ministry of AYUSH | Nodal agency for Yoga Day coordination globally |
ICCR & MEA | Cultural diplomacy and event management abroad |
NCERT, UGC | Integration of yoga in educational curriculum |
Y-Break Initiative | Yoga at workplace for government employees |
Relevance for UPSC
GS Paper 2:
- India’s foreign policy, cultural diplomacy, soft power, and role in global institutions.
- International cooperation and India’s leadership on the global wellness front.
GS Paper 4 (Ethics):
- Emotional intelligence, public service values, and leadership rooted in cultural traditions.
Challenges and Criticism
- Allegations of cultural appropriation by other countries diluting Indian origin of yoga.
- Risk of commercialization over authenticity in Western wellness markets.
- Some countries perceive yoga as religiously loaded, affecting diplomatic consensus in certain regions.
Conclusion
India’s projection of yoga as a symbol of universal harmony, balance, and well-being underscores its soft power potential. It aligns with the principles of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the world is one family) and elevates India’s status as a cultural superpower. As geopolitical competition intensifies, cultural and moral leadership, as shown through International Yoga Day, offers India a unique diplomatic advantage.
