Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Imphal (Manipur) and inaugurated 17 new development projects worth about ₹1,200 crore. These projects – spanning roads, public infrastructure and institutions – signal a renewed focus on peace through development in the conflict-affected state. In his address, the Prime Minister emphasized that the future belongs to Manipur and insisted that continued violence must end so that growth can reach the Northeast. He described the inaugurations as the beginning of a new era of infrastructure and livelihood opportunities for local communities.
Key projects inaugurated include:
New Manipur Police Headquarters at Mantripukhri (cost ~₹101 crore) – a modern facility to strengthen law enforcement.
Civil Secretariat Complex, Imphal (₹538 crore) – a cutting-edge administrative campus for state government offices.
Manipur Bhavans in Delhi and Kolkata – guest houses to represent and accommodate citizens in other metros.
IT/BT (MIND) Building – an Information Technology and Bio-Technology park to foster a startup ecosystem.
“Ima (Mother’s) Markets” Upgrades – four traditional women’s markets modernized with better amenities.
Imphal Riverfront and Mall Road Development – scenic beautification and drainage works to ease urban flooding and promote tourism.
College Infrastructure Enhancement – upgrades to five government colleges (in Imphal West, Thoubal, Kakching districts), including new labs and classrooms.
NH-37 4‑laning – a 4-lane bridge over the Irang river at Noney on the Imphal–Jiribam highway to improve connectivity.
Health Centre at Saikot (Churachandpur) – institutional building with staff quarters for rural healthcare.
These projects collectively strengthen Manipur’s civic infrastructure (roads, education, policing and technology) and were framed as benefits for “all sections” of society. The Prime Minister noted that such development can only take root in an atmosphere of peace and harmony – implicitly calling for cessation of ethnic violence. The visit underscored the government’s commitment to socio-economic integration of the Northeast and “Act East” connectivity. By linking improvements in law and order (new police HQ) with roads and education, officials say the aim is to create jobs, increase trade and empower local communities.
